Hi… this is a first post for me. I’m not sure what the subject matter says about me in particular: I’m not a huge gaming fan, or even an especially avid watcher of Youtube memes; this certainly isn’t an example of the kind of music I like, and I also normally, like any self-respecting adult who pretends to be busy, resent any Internet video over 3 minutes long.
This one lasts for 11 minutes, but wait! Come back… you need only watch the first two, I promise. Indulge me… but before you do so, let me first explain. This is a custom-built level in one of the Mario games that has been painstakingly arranged by the user so that it plays itself. Okay… an impressive start. But far more impressive than that: this user has produced an 11-minute mix of jaunty music (the track list appears on Youtube) and then constructed the level so that upon setting the plucky plumber on his way, the ensuing sound effects caused by his traversing the virtual obstacle courseĀ – grabbing coins, consuming flowers, jumping on baddies etc. – correspond exactly with the kitschly cacophonous yet strangely hypnotic mega mix.
That is to say, every shell collision, every platform leap, every Yoshi gulp has been planned in advance to correspond exactly with the sonal caprices of the aforementioned musical mix.
I have no idea how long it must take to put this together and make it work, but I can confidently say probably far longer than my first ThnkTnk post…
